FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

OCEAN PROTECTION COUNCIL GRANT MAKING OBJECTIVES

The Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is charged with implementing the California Ocean Protection Act (COPA). An important tool to achieve the provisions of COPA is the funding of projects and programs that target the actions identified in the OPC Strategic Plan.

TYPES OF FUNDING

Marine Protected Area (MPA) Monitoring Program Funding

in 2015, the legislature designated an ongoing appropriation of  $2.5 million dollars of the General Fund annually to support MPA Monitoring to evaluate the performance of California’s MPA Network. Additional funding sources may also become available to support this work. Funds are disbursed through both a competitive and needs-based process.

Proposition 84: Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006

The Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006 authorizes $5.388 billion in general obligation bonds to fund safe drinking water, water quality and supply, flood control, waterway and natural resource protection, water pollution and contamination control, state and local park improvements, public access to natural resources, and water conservation efforts.

Proposition 1: Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014

The Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014 (Prop 1) was approved by voters in November 2014 (California Water Code (CWC) Division 26.7). Prop 1 Chapter 6, “Protecting Rivers, Lakes, Streams, Coastal Waters, and Watersheds”, allocates $30 million to the OPC for a competitive grant program for multibenefit ecosystem and watershed protection and restoration projects in accordance with statewide priorities, CWC §79730 and §79731(d).
